Paper Shredding Embarrassment

Posted on 18 March 2011 by Total Secure Shredding

Are you embarrassed about shredding your documents?

Hey Folks,

There seems to be a new mental disorder (maybe mental disorder is a bit too harsh) that I’d like to to call…

“Paper Shredding Embarrassment Syndrome”

Here’s how it goes:

Customers coming into my paper shredding facility often say,

I only have a few things to shred. Actually, they’re not even really that important. To be honest, they probably don’t really even need to be shredded.

So let me get this straight, you looked online for a shredding company, more than likely gave us a phone call to make sure you got all the details correct, loaded up all your stuff, and then drove down to our facility to get it shredded…

But it’s not that important? Really?

I was talking to a customer about his the other day and I think she pin pointed the exact problem…

They might be a little embarrassed.

It’s as if they will be judged “Paranoid” by me and the rest of the world since they’re going through this process of shredding all their documents.

Here’s the deal, you’re not “Paranoid” because there are tons of people out there that are getting ripped of by Identity Theft.

Did you know that ID Theft was the NUMBER ONE complaint to the Federal Trade Commission in 2010? 19% of all complaints had to do with Identity Theft!

So there’s no need to feel embarrassed that you are being overly protective – you’re not!

We’ve had thousands of customers just like you come down to our facility to either drop-off documents or to watch their documents get shredded while they wait…

You’re in great company with thousands of other who take Identity Theft seriously.

Anyway, I hope that helps if you were perhaps on the fence deciding whether or not to bring your documents down.

Until next time…

Keep Totally Secure!

Happy Thanksgiving – Paper Shredding Closure

Posted on 24 November 2010 by Total Secure Shredding

Happy Thanksgiving

Hi Folks,

Well it’s that time of year again! The Holidays are again upon us. Not sure how they always seem to sneak up on me…

It seems like yesterday I was letting you know about the 4th of July closure!

It’s also hard to believe that it has been an entire year since I re-built the Total Secure Shredding website to include this blog and the long copy format webpages I wrote to go along with it.

I’ve gotten a ton of fantastic feedback from you my customer. It might not seem like much, but the little “You have a really nice website” comments really help justify all the work I put into it.

I have some new ideas for the website so be sure to check in between now and the new year so see the changes.

So, consequently, I extremely grateful and thankful to all our thoughtful and faithful customers over the past year. Thank you for all your support.

However, no matter how thankful I am, I’m still closing down the shop till Monday… I’ve been looking forward to this four day weekend for weeks now and I need to recharge.

We’ll be closed tomorrow for Thanksgiving, Friday, and Saturday.

Bright and early Monday November 29, 2010, we’re back open for shredding.

Have an excellent Thanksgiving weekend and I’ll see you again on the flip side!

And, as always, keep Totally Secure,

Phone Jacking Your Credit Card

Posted on 18 September 2010 by Total Secure Shredding

Hey Folks,

This blog entry takes up right where the last blog left off… Paranoia!

I saw this news story about ID Fraud the other day and I thought it was interesting – take a look! (It’s only about two and a half minutes long.)

Apparently individuals standing behind you in the line at the grocery store may be taking picture of your credit card!

I guess the deal is that with the image, they can then make charges against your credit card.

I process quite a few credit cards down at our Shredding Facility. This involves physically holding the credit card and having to enter the last four digits of the credit card account number into the terminal for verification purposes.

That being said, half the time I can barely read the last for digits of the account number.

Most of the time the color on the numbering that is used to make them stand out has been rubbed off. This makes it very difficult to read the numbers even when just a foot from my nose.

So this news story seems to imply that folks standing a few feet behind you in the store are going to be able to get a perfect enough image to get the account numbers off the card.

Well I gave it a try with my phone and one of my business cards (about the same size as a credit card with about the same font size). I was standing about 3 feet away and set up the card so I could take a direct picture. Take a look for yourself.

As you can see, it’s pretty difficult to make out any of the writing – And my business card is a high contrast bold white font on a black background.

I also took a picture of my credit card. I couldn’t make out the numbers in the picture (even when I downloaded the picture from my phone to my desktop) but I’m hesitant to put the picture on-line just because I don’t know if there is someone out there with the right software that could make out the numbers…

OK OK… Yes I’m Paranoid.

That being said, I guess this scenario is possible, but it just doesn’t seem very plausible in my opinion.

I suppose your best bet is to not flail your credit card around openly while standing in line at the grocery store – keep it under wraps until you have to swipe it.

The news story also talks about making sure you are shredding sensitive documents rather than just throwing them out… but you know all about this already since you are keeping up with all my blog entries – Right!

Anyway, enough paranoia for this week.

Until next time.

Keep Totally Secure,
